Turkish Qualifications
& Regulated Professions

Understanding how qualifications from Türkiye work in Scotland.

Do you need “denklik”? Can you use your Turkish degree directly? Do you need to register with a professional body? The answer depends on the profession and what you want to do. This guide helps you find the correct starting point.

The Key Distinction
Your degree may be academically comparable to a UK qualification.
Your profession may separately require professional registration.
Your job may have its own employer or professional requirements.
Your immigration status is a separate question from qualification recognition.
Information last reviewed: 14 September 2026 · Professional registration requirements can change.
Always confirm your individual route with the relevant regulator.
A Common Question

“Do I need denklik?”

In the UK there is no single universal process that converts every Turkish diploma into a British qualification.

First ask what the qualification is needed for.

For many jobs, the employer decides whether your education and experience are suitable. Formal professional recognition may not be required at all.

If the occupation is regulated, however, the relevant regulator — not ATAS and not UK ENIC — decides whether you meet the requirements to practise or use a protected professional title.

UK ENIC can provide an academic comparison for many international qualifications, but that is different from professional registration.

Before paying for translations, assessments or courses, identify which process actually applies to you.

02

Check the Regulator's Route

If your profession is regulated, use the regulator's route for qualifications obtained outside the UK.

03

Prepare the Right Evidence

Requirements may include diplomas, transcripts, certified translations, professional registration, course content and evidence of experience.

04

Check Work Rights Separately

Recognition of a qualification does not itself give permission to work in the UK or guarantee sponsorship.

Four Different Questions

These are often confused with one another, but they are not the same process.

Academic

Qualification Comparability

How does your Turkish qualification compare with a qualification level in the UK education systems? UK ENIC may assist with this.

Professional

Registration to Practise

Some occupations require registration with a regulator before you may practise or undertake particular professional activities.

Title

Protected Professional Titles

Titles such as solicitor, architect and Chartered Engineer have specific regulatory or professional requirements.

Immigration

Right to Work

Having a recognised qualification and having immigration permission to perform a job are separate matters.

Academic Comparison

When Might UK ENIC Help?

A Statement of Comparability explains how eligible international qualifications compare with the UK education systems.

It can provide useful context for an employer, university or professional body, but it does not itself give you a professional licence or right to practise.

UK ENIC Statement of Comparability →
An employer asks what level your degree is A Statement of Comparability may help explain an unfamiliar Turkish qualification.
Your profession is regulated Check the regulator first. Its own assessment requirements take priority over a general comparability statement.
You are applying to university The university determines its own admissions requirements and may assess your qualification directly.
You need to prove English ability A standard Statement of Comparability does not itself certify English-language proficiency.

Common Professional Routes

These summaries are starting points for people who qualified in Türkiye. The regulator makes the final decision on every professional registration application.

Registration Required

Doctors

General Medical Council · GMC

Doctors need appropriate GMC registration and a licence to practise. An overseas primary medical qualification must first meet GMC acceptability requirements.

International graduates commonly use the PLAB route, although other GMC routes can apply depending on qualifications and circumstances.
GMC Overseas Qualifications →
Registration Required

Nurses & Midwives

Nursing and Midwifery Council · NMC

Nurses and midwives trained outside the UK use the NMC overseas registration process.

The process can include qualification assessment, the Test of Competence, English-language evidence, health and character requirements and an ID check.
NMC Overseas Registration →
Registration Required

Dentists

General Dental Council · GDC

Dentists must be registered with the GDC to practise. Overseas-qualified applicants should first determine whether their qualification is recognised for registration.

Where the overseas qualification is not recognised, the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) is a route to registration.

Registration Required

Pharmacists

General Pharmaceutical Council · GPhC

Pharmacists practising in Scotland are regulated by the GPhC, which regulates pharmacy professionals across Great Britain.

The current route for relevant internationally-qualified pharmacists can include OSPAP, foundation training and the registration assessment. Check the current GPhC requirements before planning this route.

Registration Required

Allied Health & Care Professions

Health and Care Professions Council · HCPC

HCPC regulates 15 professions including physiotherapists, radiographers, paramedics, occupational therapists, dietitians, biomedical scientists and practitioner psychologists.

People trained and qualified outside the UK normally apply through the HCPC international application route.
HCPC International Applications →
Registration Required in Scottish Schools

School Teachers

General Teaching Council for Scotland · GTC Scotland

Registration with GTC Scotland is a legal requirement for people employed as teachers in Scottish schools.

Teachers who qualified outside Scotland have their academic and teaching qualifications assessed against GTC Scotland's registration requirements.

Registration Required

Social Workers

Scottish Social Services Council · SSSC

Social workers in Scotland must be registered with SSSC. A non-UK social work qualification is assessed against Scottish qualification standards.

Scotland has its own social-work regulator. An assessment by another UK nation's regulator does not automatically replace the SSSC assessment.
SSSC Non-UK Qualifications →
Protected Title

Architects

Architects Registration Board · ARB

“Architect” is a regulated professional title in the UK. Overseas qualifications must fit an ARB registration or recognition route.

Where an overseas qualification is not covered by one of ARB's international recognition arrangements, the Prescribed Examination route may be required.
ARB International Routes →
Regulated Profession

Scottish Solicitors

Law Society of Scotland

The title and regulated activities of a Scottish solicitor are governed separately from England and Wales. Lawyers qualified in another jurisdiction can apply to requalify into Scotland.

The Qualified Lawyers Assessment (QLA) is the established requalification route for lawyers already qualified outside Scotland, subject to the Law Society's eligibility process and exemptions.
Requalifying into Scotland →
Registration Required

Veterinary Surgeons

Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons · RCVS

Veterinary surgeons must join the RCVS Register before practising in the UK.

If an overseas veterinary qualification is not recognised by the RCVS, the Statutory Membership Examination may provide the route to registration.
RCVS Overseas Registration →
Professional Registration

Engineers

Engineering Council

Professional Engineering Council registration is highly valued but is not generally mandatory simply to work in engineering in the UK.

Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Engineering Technician (EngTech) and ICTTech are protected professional titles. International engineers can pursue registration through a licensed professional engineering institution.
International Engineers →
Professional Designations

Accountancy & Finance

ICAS and other professional accountancy bodies

Many finance and accounting jobs can be entered without requalifying as a UK chartered accountant, depending on the role and employer.

Professional designations such as Chartered Accountant (CA) are protected, and activities such as statutory audit have additional regulatory requirements.

Your profession is not listed here?

This is not an exhaustive list. The UK Regulated Professions Register contains hundreds of regulated professions and lets you filter by sector and by Scotland. Always search there before assuming that your occupation is unregulated.

Documents to Prepare

Do not order every document or translation in advance. Each regulator has its own requirements. Start with its checklist, then obtain the evidence actually required.

Degree Certificate / Diploma Your final award issued by the awarding university or institution.
Official Transcript Subjects, grades, credits and other details of the programme completed.
English Versions or Certified Translations Check the receiving organisation's translation rules before paying for a translation.
Identity Documents Passport and, where relevant, evidence explaining any change of name.
Professional Registration Evidence of registration with the relevant Turkish chamber, bar, professional body or authority where applicable.
Certificate of Good Standing Some professional regulators require confirmation of your current or previous professional standing.
Course / Syllabus Information A regulator may require detailed programme content, learning outcomes, placement hours or module descriptions.
Employment & Practice Evidence References, internship evidence, employment history or details of professional practice may be relevant.

If You Use UK ENIC

For a Statement of Comparability, UK ENIC currently asks applicants to provide qualification and identity evidence through its online service.

Certificate

Final Qualification

Upload the final certificate for the completed qualification you want assessed.

Transcript

Official Academic Record

UK ENIC requires an official transcript showing subjects and grades, issued by the awarding institution.

Language

Translation

Non-English documents may require a certified translation depending on the current Translation Waiver rules.

Identity

Proof of Identity

Identity evidence and, where relevant, documentation explaining changes of name are also required.

Practical Tips for Qualifications from Türkiye

A little preparation can prevent unnecessary expense and make your qualification easier for employers and regulators to understand.

1
Ask your university for official English documents first

If your university can issue an official English transcript, diploma supplement or other academic documentation, check whether the receiving organisation will accept it before arranging separate translations.

2
Do not translate Turkish job titles literally

Explain responsibilities and seniority in terms a UK employer will understand rather than relying on a direct translation of an unfamiliar title.

3
Keep evidence from professional bodies

Where relevant, retain records from professional chambers, the Ankara Bar or other regulators, including dates of registration and good standing.

4
Keep detailed course information

Regulators sometimes assess content, clinical placement, teaching practice or professional experience rather than simply the title of a degree.

5
Do not assume recognition means employment

Registration can make you legally eligible to practise, but recruitment, job availability, references and employer requirements remain separate.

6
Check visa requirements independently

Professional recognition does not create a right to work. The employer and proposed role must also fit your immigration status where applicable.

How ATAS Can Help

We can help members navigate the system and connect with relevant experience, but professional recognition decisions remain with the official bodies.

ATAS Can Support You With

Our role is practical orientation, community knowledge and connection.

✓ Identifying the appropriate official regulator or professional body
✓ Connecting with professionals and academics through the ATAS community

What ATAS Cannot Decide

ATAS is not a professional regulator, qualifications-recognition authority or immigration adviser.

× Whether your qualification satisfies a regulator's professional standards
× Whether you will receive professional registration or an exemption
× Whether an employer must accept a particular overseas qualification
× Whether your individual immigration status allows a particular job or professional activity

Not sure where to start?

First search the UK Regulated Professions Register. If your occupation is regulated, follow the regulator's overseas-qualification route. If it is not, focus on how employers assess your qualification, skills and professional experience.
